So, what's so good about Celebrants?

Sarah Barnes

When I'm at a wedding fair or speaking to people out and about, the answer to my question "do you know much about Celebrancy?" the answer is invariably "no" or "not much".

The term Celebrant is borrowed from Latin celebrant-, celebrans, present participle of celebrāre "to throng, frequent, observe (an occasion, festivity), praise" [1]

The concept of Civil Celebrancy, in its current form, has been around since the early 70s but it seems now that this growth industry is coming into its own. With so many to choose from, it should be easy to find a Celebrant who can take the elements that you hold dear, and craft it into a ceremony that will give you treasured memories for years to come. You can choose from traditional, wacky, wild, alternative, themed, conservative, hippy, professional and anything in between.

So why would you want to choose a Celebrant for your service rather than a religious representative or Government employee?

Firstly, what are you celebrating?

We as humans have an innate need to celebrate life events. Whether it's the birth of a child, a coming of age, an engagement, wedding or renewal, a divorce or 'Liberation'. A graduation, a change of identity or paying homage to our loved ones after their life has come to an end. Every race and creed has their way of celebrating these events and there is a wealth of examples where cultures have borrowed from each other in a glorius mixing pot. A Celebrant has the freedom to pick and choose the elements, traditions and rituals that suit you and your close ones, to create a truly bespoke ceremony.

Secondly, what do you want to achieve and why are you doing it?

Some clients want a very simple service with no 'bells and whistles'. Others want their day to combine interests and loved ones in an extravaganza. The point is that everyone is different and not one style of ceremony suits everyone. A Celebrant has the skills to create something magical, however big or small that may be. You may have 100 guests, or it might be limited to a wedding of 2 guests or a funeral with only familly. It's your choice.

Next, who do I choose?

Looking at Celebrants' websites is a great place to start. At sarahbarnescelebrant.co.uk you can find information about what services you may receive for the cost. You could look at the photographs, style of website and reviews from customers to see if the Celebrant might fit with your ideals. I would also recommend having a chat. A no obligation meeting

will give you the opportunity to see if you click. It's a little like dating in that you need to feel comfortable from the beginning. Your Celebrant will guide you from the initial meeting, right through your ceremony, so it should be someone you feel you can trust to 'hold your hand' (theoretically or literally!) through the happiest and saddest occasions. You never know, this could be someone who sees you through a wide range of life events in the future and may end up being a friend.
